Living with Diabetes
Being diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes can be overwhelming.
Once the initial shock passes, the intensive education process begins. It's a new way of living and there is so much to learn: nutrition, ketones, glucose levels, monitors, carbohydrate counting, insulin dosages and the list goes on...but you are not alone! The purpose of the Outreach Program is to give a helping hand to newly diagnosed families by connecting them with resources and other families who have gone through that same difficult time.
Mentor Families
Our network of mentor families is about sharing, helping, listening, and forming new friendships with people who understand your fears, questions and even your tears. This network operates through the Greater Dallas Chapter of JDRF, but is driven and coordinated by volunteers who have been where you are.
The Bag of Hope
The Bag of Hope, the cornerstone of the Outreach Program, contains useful information such as books about diabetes, a Accu-Chek Aviva meter, and Rufus, the bear with diabetes. These bags are graciously underwritten by Roche Diagnostics and with volunteer help are delivered to Children's Medical Center for distribution to newly diagnosed families. Coffee for a Cure
Coffees are hosted in Dallas and Collin County by families in those areas that are involved with JDRF. The primary purpose of the "Coffee for a Cure" is to give parents of children with type 1 diabetes a chance to meet, network and educate one another. If you are interested in attending one in your area, please contact us.
JDRF D-Moms Coffee Club
The Greater Dallas Chapter is forming a new Committee to capture the passion and connectivity that trusted Moms provide in our lives. Moms are involved at JDRF in many ways, and one way in which JDRF and Moms can futher the cure is to put our resources together to help drive the message in Moms circles, which helps JDRF raise much needed funds for diabetes research.
- We see D-Moms as an extension resource for JDRF to help spread the word about diabetes, research and our fund raising programs; especially Walk and School Walk.
- D-Moms brings awareness to their community, schools and neighborhoods.
- D-Moms network with other mothers with children living with type 1 diabetes.
- D-Moms help to get the word out about what JDRF is doing on the research forefront plus all the fun activities that happen within the Greater Dallas Chapter.
For more information on the D-Moms prgoram, please contact the Greater Dallas Chapter at (214) 373-9808.

Committee Recruiting
30 new families are diagnosed at Children's Medical Center every month, and the Outreach Committee's goal is to support and supply information to all of these families; but we need help to do it. If you would like to assist the Outreach Committee by becoming a JDRF Outreach Mentor, call us for more information.
Adult Type 1 Network Group
JDRF is not just for kids or newly diagnosed! We have a great network group that is just for adults living with type 1 diabetes. The goal of this group is to bring everyone together to share mutual support, exchange information and resources, and hear from guest speakers on a variety of topics. This is a positive atmosphere and a great way to meet other adults living with type 1 diabetes.
Don't miss your opportunity to meet & mingle other adults living with type 1 diabetes on April 8, 2010 from 6-8pm. JDRF will be hosting a short, 15 minute Board update followed by a Research Update at the DoubleTree Campbell Centre. Cocktails and hors d'oeuvres will be served. Please send all RSVPs to Ellen Morrow at emorrow@jdrf.org.
Please remember that YOU ARE NOT ALONE. JDRF is here to help.
