JDRF has established a set of five cure therapeutic research areas to guide its research funding efforts. These research goal areas hold the greatest potential to lead to breakthrough cures and treatments for type 1 diabetes and its complications (click each underlined link for more information):

Autoimmunity: Stopping or reversing the immune system attack that causes diabetes
Regeneration: Regenerating insulin-producing cells in producing cells in people who have diabetes
Replacement: Replacing the insulin-producing cells killed off by diabetes with functioning ones
Complications: Treating and reversing the devastating complications of diabetes
Metabolic Control: Treatments that monitor blood sugar levels and automatically respond with insulin

JDRF Announces First Step to Artificial Pancreas: an innovative, non-exclusive partnership with Animas Corporation to develop an automated system to help people with type 1 diabetes better control their disease - the first step on the path to what would be among the most revolutionary advancements in treating type 1 diabetes: the development of an artificial pancreas, a fully automated system to dispense insulin to patients based on real-time changes in blood sugar levels.

JDRF Funded Research Advances Potential For Regeneration As A Possible Cure For Type 1 Diabetes: A hormone responsible for the body's stress response is also linked to the growth of insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, according to JDRF- funded researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in California.  The findings are the latest advances to underscore the potential for regeneration as a key component of a possible cure for type 1 diabetes.
